The Seven Laws

LawRuleExample
Productx^a x x^b = x^(a+b)2^3 x 2^4 = 2^7 = 128
Quotientx^a / x^b = x^(a-b)5^6 / 5^2 = 5^4 = 625
Power of power(x^a)^b = x^(ab)(3^2)^3 = 3^6 = 729
Power of product(xy)^a = x^a y^a(2x3)^2 = 36
Zero exponentx^0 = 1999^0 = 1
Negativex^(-a) = 1/x^a2^-3 = 1/8
Fractionalx^(a/b) = b-th root of x^a8^(2/3) = 4

Laws stack: simplify outside-in. (2x^3)^2 x x^-1: power-of-power first gives 4x^6, then the product law merges x^6 x x^-1 = x^5, yielding 4x^5. Working from the outermost operation inward keeps the steps ordered - each law fires exactly once, in sequence, with no backtracking.

Rational expressions are quotient-law workouts. (6x^4y^2)/(3x^2y^5): divide coefficients 6/3 = 2, subtract x exponents 4 - 2 = 2, subtract y exponents 2 - 5 = -3, giving 2x^2/y^3. Negative exponents migrate across the fraction bar as a final cleanup step - the quotient law does the heavy lifting.

Negative and Fractional Exponents

Negative: 10^-4 = 1/10,000 = 0.0001. Flip to the denominator.

Fractional: 16^(1/2) = sqrt(16) = 4. 27^(1/3) = 3. 8^(2/3): cube root of 8 = 2, squared = 4.

Combined example: (4x^2)^-1 x (2x)^3 = (1/4x^2) x 8x^3 = 2x.

Triple-combined exponents decode in a fixed order: root, power, reciprocal. 32^(-2/5): the denominator 5 means fifth root (fifth root of 32 = 2), the numerator 2 means square it (4), the negative means reciprocate: 1/4. Denominator-root, numerator-power, negative-flip - say it as a mantra and no combined exponent survives.

Negative exponents do not change the multiplication rule. (2 x 10^-3)(4 x 10^5): coefficients 2 x 4 = 8, exponents -3 + 5 = 2, giving 8 x 10^2 = 800. The sign of the exponent is just part of the addition - students who treat negative exponents as a separate case invent difficulties the rules never had.

Exponential Growth and Decay

Growth: A = P(1+r)^t | Decay: A = P(1-r)^t

Bacteria doubling hourly: Start 100, after 8 hours: 100 x 2^8 = 25,600.

Half-life: 50g substance, half-life 3 years, after 12 years: 50 x (1/2)^4 = 3.125g.

Compound interest is exponential growth - the Rule of 72 estimates doubling time.

The Rule of 72 estimates doubling time mentally: 72 divided by the percent rate. At 8% growth, money doubles in 72/8 = 9 years - so $10,000 becomes roughly $20,000. The exact math, 1.08^9 = 1.999, confirms the rule is scary accurate for rates between 6% and 10%. Bankers quote it because it converts any rate into a time horizon instantly.

Carbon dating counts half-life steps. C-14 has a half-life of 5,730 years; a sample at 25% of its original C-14 has survived two halvings (1/2)^2 = 1/4, so it is about 11,460 years old. Each halving is one exponent step - dating is just solving (1/2)^n = remaining fraction for n, then multiplying by the half-life.

Common Mistakes

Addition is not multiplication: 2^3 + 2^3 = 8 + 8 = 16, not 2^6 = 64. Same bases combine only by factoring: 2^3 + 2^3 = 2 x 2^3 = 2^4. Exponent laws govern products and powers - addition plays by ordinary arithmetic, and smuggling exponent rules across the plus sign is the single most common algebra error.

Negatives refuse to distribute over sums. (x + y)^-1 is 1/(x+y), emphatically not x^-1 + y^-1: with x = 2, y = 3, the left side is 1/5 while the right side is 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6. Reciprocals distribute over multiplication - (xy)^-1 = x^-1 y^-1 - but a sum inside the parentheses is a locked box: simplify it first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Product (add), quotient (subtract), power-of-power (multiply), zero = 1, negative = reciprocal, fractional = roots. See the table above.

Reciprocal: x^-n = 1/x^n. 2^-3 = 1/8.

A root: x^(1/n) is the nth root; x^(m/n) is the nth root raised to m. 8^(2/3) = 4.

Consistency: x^3/x^3 = x^0 must equal 1 (anything divided by itself).

They're inverses: if 10^2 = 100, then log10(100) = 2. Logs 'undo' exponents.
