Slope Guide 2026: Formula, Intercept and Line Equations

Slope Formula
Example: Points (2, 3) and (8, 15): m = (15-3)/(8-2) = 12/6 = 2.
Interpretation: Positive = rising; negative = falling; zero = horizontal; undefined (0 denominator) = vertical line.
Equal slopes test whether points share a line. For (1, 2), (3, 6), (5, 10): slope between the first two is (6-2)/(3-1) = 2, and between the last two is (10-6)/(5-3) = 2. Same slope means collinear. GPS apps run this check constantly, snapping jittery location points to the road they most plausibly lie on.
Every "per" statement is secretly a slope. Temperature climbing from 60F to 78F over 6 hours has slope (78 - 60)/6 = 3 degrees per hour. Speed is the slope of a distance-time graph; flow rate is the slope of a volume-time graph; burn rate is the slope of a cash-time graph. If the units read "something per something," you are looking at rise over run.
Slope powers linear regression: the line of best fit through data points has slope m = correlation × (SD of y ÷ SD of x). If study hours and exam scores correlate at 0.8, with SDs of 5 hours and 12 points, each extra hour predicts 0.8 × (12/5) = 1.92 more points. Every trendline you've seen — stock charts, climate graphs, sales forecasts — is slope doing this exact calculation, turning scattered data into a single rate of change.
Slope-Intercept Form
Example: Through (2, 3) with slope 2: 3 = 2(2) + b, b = -1. Equation: y = 2x - 1.
Phone plan: $30 base + $0.10/min: y = 0.10x + 30. 200 minutes: 0.10(200) + 30 = $50.
Standard form converts cleanly: 3x + 2y = 12 becomes 2y = -3x + 12, then y = -1.5x + 6. Now the slope (-1.5) and intercept (6) are visible. The procedure is always the same - isolate y - and it works no matter how tangled the original equation looks. Solve for y first, read the line second.
Point-slope form is the shortcut when you know a point and a slope. Through (4, 7) with slope -2: y - 7 = -2(x - 4), which expands to y = -2x + 15. Slope-intercept form would have required solving for b as a second step; point-slope writes the answer almost directly. Use point-slope for construction, slope-intercept for reading.
Parallel and Perpendicular
| Relationship | Slope Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Parallel | Same slope | y = 2x + 1 || y = 2x - 5 |
| Perpendicular | Negative reciprocal | m = 2 meets m = -1/2 |
Perpendicular through (4, 1) to y = 2x - 1: new slope -1/2. 1 = -1/2(4) + b, b = 3: y = -x/2 + 3.
The parallel/perpendicular rules have edge cases the formulas miss. Horizontal lines (slope 0) are parallel to each other; vertical lines (undefined slope) are parallel to each other; and any horizontal line is perpendicular to any vertical line. The negative-reciprocal rule only governs slanted lines - for axis-aligned lines, think geometrically instead of algebraically.
The perpendicular segment from a point to a line is the shortest possible connection, which makes it a cost-minimizer. A barn 200 feet from a straight road needs the shortest fence: the perpendicular one, exactly 200 feet. Any angled fence is longer by the hypotenuse rule. When the job is "connect this point to that line cheapest," perpendicularity is the answer.
Real-World Slopes
- Roof pitch: 6/12 pitch = slope 0.5 (rises 6" per 12" run).
- Road grades: 6% grade = slope 0.06 - steep for highways.
- Economics: Demand curves slope negative; supply positive.
- Speed: Distance-time graph slope = velocity.
Accessibility law is written in slope. The ADA caps wheelchair ramps at a 1:12 slope - one inch of rise per twelve inches of run. A 24-inch rise to a porch therefore needs 24 feet of ramp. Steeper fails inspection, no exceptions. Few people expect a middle-school math concept to carry the force of federal law, but slope noncompliance is one of the most cited building violations.
Percent grade is not degrees, and the confusion is everywhere. A 10% grade means rise/run = 0.10, which is arctan(0.10) - about 5.7 degrees. A 45-degree slope is a 100% grade. So a "45% grade" warning sign describes roughly 24 degrees - steep for a road, but nowhere near the cliff face people imagine. Road signs and ski runs speak percent; protractors speak degrees.
Frequently Asked Questions
Steepness of a line: rise over run, or (y2-y1)/(x2-x1). It measures how fast y changes per unit of x.
A vertical line - run is zero, and division by zero is undefined. Equation form: x = constant.
Compute slope m, plug one point into y = mx + b, solve for b.
Zero - no rise. Equation: y = constant.
Identical slopes. Perpendicular lines have slopes that are negative reciprocals (m1 x m2 = -1).
